Harataonga Road

4WD track in the Auckland region

Harataonga Road on Great Barrier Island is a short, easy gravel run down through bush hills to a quiet sheltered bay and campsite.

A short gravel road on the eastern side of Great Barrier Island that winds down through a quiet corner to the bay at its end. Bush-clad hills roll down to meet the calm, sheltered water, which is about as classic Great Barrier as it gets.

The driving is easy going and doesn't ask much of you. Gravel the whole way, with nothing technical about it, so it's a simple way to get down to the coast.

At the bottom you'll reach Harataonga Bay, a peaceful seaside spot with a campsite and beach right there. Good one for a relaxed base if you're exploring the island.
