Hamilton Road

4WD track in the Bay of Plenty region

Hamilton Road is a sheltered Bay of Plenty forestry route with side tracks and tricky ruts that make it scratchier than its easy-connector reputation suggests.

(1)

Hamilton Road runs through forestry country in the Bay of Plenty, winding beneath the trees for much of its length. The forest cover gives the route a quiet, sheltered feel, and there's a network of side tracks to explore, particularly at the Pongakawa Valley Road end.

Despite its reputation as an easy connector, the track is scratchier and more challenging than it first appears. Expect some interesting angles and ruts that can catch out mostly-stock trucks, along with tight, overgrown sections that'll leave bush rash if you care about your paint. It's a handy link for piecing together a longer loop, but it has more character than a simple through road.

As with any forestry road, keep an eye out for logging activity and other users. Given the terrain, it's best not tackled solo, and treated as part of a wider day's exploring rather than a destination in itself.
