Garibaldi Diggings

4WD track in the Otago region

Garibaldi Diggings is a medium-grade Otago 4WD run climbing from gravel to open grass, past old gold-era relic huts, with big ruts and rocks along the way.

(2)

Starts off easy on a scenic gravel road before it turns to a less formed dirt route, then opens onto grass where you pick your own way up to the old relic huts near the diggings.

A fun medium-grade run with plenty of character. Expect big ruts and rocks along the way, and a top section where the original track has corroded away, so you'll be picking your own line to reach the top. The ground is clay-based and forms boggy low points after rain, so 4WD is recommended in the wet and it's best left alone when it's raining.

Gold was found here in 1865 by Italian miners, which is how it got the name. Keep an eye out for the inquisitive sheep roaming the upper grass slopes. A rewarding outing if you enjoy a bit of historic backcountry exploring.
