4WD track in the Canterbury region
Clyde River is a remote Canterbury high country route up a braided riverbed, with river crossings, alpine water and access by prior permission only.
A braided riverbed runs up between mountains in the Canterbury high country, and the drive follows the valley floor rather than any formed track. The line you take changes constantly with the flow and the shifting gravel, so it's a genuine river route, not a road.
Big open mountain country is the drawcard, with clear alpine water and a proper sense of remoteness. Because it's a river crossing route, plan carefully around the weather and river levels, and only have a go when conditions are settled.
Access is on private land, so you'll need permission sorted at least a week ahead with a phone call before you head in. Come prepared and self-sufficient, travel with another vehicle where you can, and treat the river with respect.
