4WD track in the Canterbury region
Clyde River is a remote Canterbury high-country river route up a braided alpine valley, suited to well-prepared 4WDs travelling in settled conditions.
The Clyde River route runs up a braided riverbed in the Canterbury high country, hemmed in by mountains on either side. As a genuine river route, it follows the valley floor rather than a formed track, so the line you take changes constantly with the flow and the shifting gravel.
The scenery is the drawcard here: big open mountain country, clear alpine water and a real sense of remoteness. Because it is a river crossing route, plan carefully around the weather and river levels, and only attempt it when conditions are settled.
Access is on private land, so permission must be granted at least a week beforehand via a phone call before you head into the area. Come prepared and self-sufficient, travel with another vehicle where possible, and treat the river with respect.
