4WD track in the Canterbury region
Clarence Reserve (South) is a remote Canterbury high-country 4WD route with river fords and big valley views, closed over winter and access by arrangement.
High country at its most remote, straddling the Seaward Kaikoura Range where the Clarence Valley opens up around you. Big views, plenty of river and stream crossings, and the feeling of being a long way from anywhere. The Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Clarence Reserve takes you right into that backcountry.
The section between the Kahutara gate and Quail Flat runs 30 km and takes at least two hours. Steep, rough and narrow in places, with several fords to work through. Slips and floods are common, so safe passage is never guaranteed. The track closes over winter, from 1 May until late October.
Keep to the formed track, leave gates as you find them, and steer clear of farm operations and stock. Access into the Clarence needs arranging beforehand with Colin Nimmo of Muzzle Station on +64 3 319 5791 or [email protected], and there's a road maintenance fee for vehicles. Medium-grade going, and drivers reckon it's an epic one well worth the effort.
