Access is via a mix of sealed and gravel back roads south of Nelson, eventually joining Pig Valley Rd before continuing onto Old Mill Rd. From here, Ben Nevis Rd climbs steeply into pine forest — this final section is rough, narrow, and winding, and 4WD is essential. Stay on the main route and follow the orange DOC markers, as several forestry tracks branch off along the way.

The road finishes at a small parking area near a gate. Before heading in, check DOC’s Mt Richmond Forest Park access updates, as forestry operations or high fire risk can close the road.
