Waverley Beach Campground

Campsite in the Manawatu-Whanganui region

(3)

Tucked away on the South Taranaki coast near Waverley in the Manawatu-Whanganui region, this is a large, well-sheltered campground offering 28 unmarked powered sites, with extra space for unpowered camping at the far end. Trees provide good protection from the coastal wind, and although you can't see the sea from the campground, it's only a short walk to the black sand beach, where caves and papa rock are best explored at low tide. Facilities include hot showers, flushing toilets, a kitchen with two ovens, stove-top elements, four sinks and bench space (no fridge), a shared dining area with tables, free BBQ use, and a large playground that's a hit with kids. Fees are paid on an honesty system, with rangers checking payments and providing an access code for the kitchen and bathrooms. Dogs are not permitted. A custodian oversees the site during summer. Administered by South Taranaki District Council; for enquiries call 0800 111 323.
