Ten Man Hut sits within the Tongariro Forest Conservation Area in the Manawatu-Whanganui region. Built by hunters, this well-regarded backcountry hut remains a popular base for those heading into the surrounding forest. The setting is remote and rugged, with native bush all around.

Access is via a 4WD or quad track that shows on the topo map as 'top track', finishing with a rough, steep hill climb to reach the hut itself. It's rough going throughout, so a capable vehicle and some patience are needed to get up there.

The hut is in good condition and offers basic comforts for a backcountry stay, with heating and mattresses provided. It's a no-frills, traditional hunters' hut rather than a developed campsite, so come prepared and pack out what you pack in. Recent visitors have even packed out rubbish left by others, so bring a spare bag. A solid, characterful spot for hunters and adventurous travellers wanting an off-the-beaten-track overnight in the heart of the Tongariro Forest.
