Beech forest runs right down to the water's edge here, hung with mistletoe through summer, and the lake sits ringed by mountains that make the whole place worth the trip. It's a lakeside spot in Ruataniwha Conservation Park, and the setting is hard to beat.

There's plenty of room to spread out, though it fills up in peak season. Facilities are simple: non-flush toilets, a shelter, and water from the stream. Boat launching too if you've brought a craft along. Pick your spot with the wind in mind and you'll get decent shelter.

A couple of things worth knowing. The ground is rocky in places, so getting tent pegs in can be a battle. And it pays to check the forecast before you head in, as the weather here can turn quickly and catch people out. Get the right spot and pitch up for the night, and it's a peaceful, scenic base for exploring the park.
