Campsite in the Canterbury region
Red Stag Hut is a clean four-bunk Canterbury hut in Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park, with an outdoor bath tub and glacier access beyond a river crossing.
Red Stag Hut is a basic four-bunk hut in the Aoraki/Mount Cook area of Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park, Canterbury. It sits up a small climb and is reached by crossing a river along the way. The hut is owned and maintained by the South Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association.
Well-liked and reportedly kept clean, the hut has mattresses provided on its bunks. A standout feature is the outdoor bath tub, a real treat after a day on the tops, along with a separate toilet. The surrounding high country gives access toward the glacier for those keen to explore further.
One thing to keep in mind: the river crossing can rise quickly after heavy or overnight rain, so plan your timing and be prepared to wait it out if conditions turn. The hut is free, though a donation can be made on the DOC site.
