Red Stag Hut

Campsite in the Canterbury region

Red Stag Hut is a clean four-bunk hut in Canterbury's high country with an outdoor bath tub, reached by a river crossing and a short climb.

(2)

Tucked into the high country, this little four-bunk hut sits at the top of a small climb. You cross a river to get to it. The surrounding tops give access toward the glacier if you're keen to push on further.

Red Stag Hut is owned and looked after by the South Canterbury branch of the Deerstalkers' Association, and it's well-liked for being kept clean. There are mattresses on the bunks, a separate toilet, and the real drawcard, an outdoor bath tub. Hard to beat after a day on the tops.

The river crossing can rise quickly after heavy or overnight rain, so plan your timing and be ready to wait it out if things turn. The hut is free, though you can leave a donation on the DOC site.
