Piropiro is a spacious, well-kept basic DoC campsite tucked into Pureora Forest Park, in the Waitomo/Pureora area of the Waikato. There's plenty of flat ground for tents, with sheltered nooks to tuck into and escape the wind, and most sites have a fire pit of some sort. A flowing river and forest scenery make for a peaceful setting.

Facilities are simple but tidy. Visitors consistently report the non-flush toilets as clean and surprisingly well kept, and water comes from the nearby stream. There's a smaller site a few kilometres up the road by the ford if you'd like more space.

It's a great base for exploring, with quiet loop walks from the site, mountain bike trails, and gravel forest roads leading off into the bush. A few small 4x4 ruts and quad/dirt bike tracks nearby give you something to play on. Watch for blackberry around the edges. Winters here get bitterly cold, so come prepared and bring your own firewood, as on-site wood tends to be wet. Expect some passing traffic, mostly hunters and dirt bikes.
