Otaki Forks Campsite

Campsite in the Wellington region

Otaki Forks Campsite in Wellington's Tararua Forest Park, a riverside spot with swimming holes, walking trails and old mill relics to explore.

(4)

One of the main ways into Tararua Forest Park, sitting on open river terraces at Schoolhouse Flats among regenerating bush. Plenty of room to pitch a tent and there are river swimming holes close by. The drive in is a long, narrow, winding road, though it's a nice one.

The camp is right in a web of walking and hunting trails. Day walks lead to Parawai Hut and further on, and if you keep an eye out you'll spot relics of an old mill scattered along the trails and creeks, including abandoned railway iron and steam boilers.

You get non-powered tent sites, toilets and water drawn from the stream, with some wheelchair-accessible areas. It's dog friendly, and the DOC staff have a good name for being helpful. No rubbish bins here, so pack out everything you bring in.
