Ōtaki Forks Campsite at Schoolhouse Flats is one of the main entrances to Tararua Forest Park, in the Wellington region. Set among open river terraces and regenerating bush, it's a scenic spot with plenty of room to pitch a tent and river swimming holes close by.
The site sits within a network of walking and hunting trails. Day walks lead to Parawai Hut and beyond, and history buffs will spot scattered relics of an old mill, including abandoned railway iron and steam boilers along the trails and creeks. The access road in is a long, narrow, winding drive.
Facilities include non-powered tent sites, toilets and water drawn from the stream, with wheelchair-accessible areas. The site is dog friendly and DOC staff are known to be friendly and helpful. There are no rubbish bins, so pack out everything you bring in.
