Mokau Landing Campsite

Campsite in the Gisborne region

(4)

Set on the shores of Lake Waikaremoana in Te Urewera, Gisborne, Mokau Landing is a large grassy campsite nestled between native rainforest and the lake, about 1.5 km from Mōkau Falls. The setting is peaceful and well suited to families, with plenty of space to spread out and clean non-flush toilets on site. There's a boat launch, fire pits for campfires (outside fire bans), and untreated tap water that should be boiled before use. The lake is right at your doorstep for swimming and fishing, and there's a white sandy 'beach' at the next bay along. Walks abound, including an easy stroll to the waterfall, and some have found a hidden waterfall by following the stream at the far end of the camp into the bush. Sites are non-powered, and the campsite is wheelchair accessible with assistance. Firewood is scarce and tends to be damp here, so it's worth bringing your own. A quiet, scenic spot that rewards those who linger.
