Matata Campsite

Campsite in the Bay of Plenty region

Matata Campsite is a clean, family-friendly Bay of Plenty beachside spot with grassy sites, White Island views and a short walk to town.

(6)

This family-friendly campsite sits on the Bay of Plenty coast in the Matatā area, right beside the beach and next to the Matatā wildlife refuge. It's a popular, well-maintained spot with an open, grassy layout and ocean views that stretch out to Whakaari/White Island in the distance.

The setting suits fishing and swimming, and there's good sand driving on the adjacent Matatā Lagoon track. Despite the coastal feel, it's only a short walk back into town and across the road to a shop for re-supply, making it handy as well as scenic.

Facilities include non-powered tent sites, a hot shower, water from the tap and decent toilets, with a ranger on duty who visitors regularly praise as helpful. Camping is typically around $18 per person. No dogs are allowed.

Generally quiet and peaceful, though it can fill up over peak holiday periods. A reliable, clean coastal base for a relaxed beachside stay.
