Right on the coast beside the beach and next to the Matatā wildlife refuge, this is an open, grassy campsite with ocean views that reach out to Whakaari/White Island in the distance. Well-maintained and popular, with a relaxed feel.

Good for fishing and swimming, and there's a decent bit of sand driving on the Matatā Lagoon track right next door. Despite the beachside setting, it's only a short walk back into town and across the road to a shop for re-supply.

You'll find non-powered tent sites, a hot shower, water from the tap and decent toilets. There's a ranger on duty who visitors regularly say is helpful. Camping runs around $18 per person, and no dogs are allowed.

Generally quiet and peaceful, though it can fill up over the peak holiday periods. A clean, reliable coastal base for a relaxed stay by the water.
