Henry Creek Campsite

Campsite in the Southland region

(1)

Henry Creek is a quiet DOC campsite on the shores of Lake Te Anau in Fiordland National Park, sitting alongside the road from Te Anau to Milford Sound. As the first camp along that famous route, it's a handy and scenic spot to break the journey. The setting is lovely and sheltered, with small, private tent sites tucked among the trees and some pitches just a few metres from the lake edge. Being well screened by bush, it offers good protection from the wind, though the ground can be firm, so bring decent tent pegs. Facilities are basic but adequate: non-powered tent sites, standard non-flush long-drop toilets, and water drawn from the stream. The sites are wheelchair accessible with assistance. A DOC ranger collects camping fees, sometimes coming round in the early morning. With its tranquil lakeside outlook and easy access off the Milford road, it makes a peaceful base for exploring the wider Fiordland area.
