(4)

Dunham's Point Reserve sits on the shores of Lake Whakamaru in the South Waikato, with access from Ongaroto Road. It's one of the district's designated free camping areas, requiring a permit that's quick and easy to obtain.

The reserve offers stunning views over the Waikato River, with unusual rocks visible beneath the water and high bluffs rising above the opposite bank. Large grassy areas make it ideal for family picnics and casual camping, and many campers choose to set up right by the river. Visitors consistently describe it as a peaceful, quiet place to overnight, with lovely lake and river outlooks to wake up to.

Facilities include long drop toilets and a hot shower, which campers especially appreciate first thing in the morning. Note that mobile phone service is patchy here, so come prepared to be off the grid. As with any free site, please pack out your rubbish and leave it tidy for the next visitors.

A relaxed, scenic stop whether you're staying a night or pausing for a riverside picnic.
