Coe's Ford Reserve is a popular free campsite just outside Christchurch in Canterbury, set on either side of the Selwyn River. There's plenty of room to spread out across large open grassy areas split into three fields, making it a relaxed spot for swimming, fishing and picnics. The river is the highlight here, with shallow water that's home to little fish and eels you can spot at night. Being close to the city, it can get busy and occasionally noisy, but there's usually space to find a quiet corner. Public flushing toilets and rubbish bins are provided, but note there are no showers. Maximum stay is 28 days and bookings aren't required. The reserve typically closes over the winter months, and may also close at short notice during heavy rainfall or flooding. Dogs are welcome but must be kept under effective control at all times. An easy, handy base near Christchurch for a low-cost overnight or a riverside afternoon.
