Whatipu Road sits at the southern end of the Waitakere Ranges, running from Huia out to the Whatipu beach carpark. It's an easy, well-formed gravel road that winds through native bush, with some cool views opening up along the way. The setting is the real drawcard here: lush forest, a rugged West Coast feel, and several walking and hiking tracks branching off the road that are well worth stopping for. Whatipu itself is known for its dramatic black sand and wild coastal scenery at the end of the drive. While it carries the 4WD label, this is a gentle route that any vehicle can comfortably handle, including 2WD cars, making it an accessible getaway into the bush for a relaxed day out close to Auckland. Take your time, pull over for the views, and stretch your legs on the trails.
