Whataroa River

4WD track in the West Coast region

Whataroa River is a scenic West Coast gravel route through native forest and a DoC reserve toward braided river flats, with disputed and unverified access.

(2)

This gravel route heads down toward the Whataroa River on the West Coast, branching off the Tunnel Creek Access track about 5.6km from State Highway 6. It threads through stunning West Coast forest and a DoC reserve, with the road parcel winding down toward the river.

The driving is rough gravel and low on bush rash, making for a scenic, easy-going run through dense native bush. Once you reach the river the area opens up and you can pick your own adventure along the braided flats.

Note that access here is disputed and unverified. The boundary between public road and surrounding farmland is unsigned, and drivers have reported being turned back over land ownership. Treat the route with respect, proceed with caution, and be prepared that you may not get all the way through to the river itself. Even so, the forest scenery on the way down is well worth the trip.
