Wharekauhau Stream

4WD track in the Wellington region

Wharekauhau Stream is an easy Wellington coast run up a shifting river bed, suited to almost any 4x4, with great coastal views near the beach.

(4)

A short, cruisy run up a constantly changing river bed and into a valley, out on the Wellington coast. The going is generally easy and well within reach of almost any standard 4x4, with rocky sections that bounce you around a fair bit. Airing down adds a lot of comfort here.

The terrain gets rougher toward the far end, where the trail fades out and most drivers turn back before reaching it. You'll get maybe half an hour up the river bed before parking and walking becomes the sensible call.

The coastal scenery is the real draw, with the views opening up as you near the beach and cliffs worth keeping an eye on. Because the channels in the river bed shift constantly, take real care with water crossings and don't go in too deep. A nice little side quest if you're staying at Corner Creek.
