Whanganui Inlet

4WD track in the Tasman region

Whanganui Inlet is a scenic Tasman gravel road tracing a coastal inlet, with low-tide river crossings and big sand dunes to play on.

(1)

Tucked away on the northern West Coast of the South Island, this gravel road follows a coastal inlet that's well worth the trip. The road hugs the water, crosses single-lane bridges, and serves up coastal views the whole way.

Beyond the gravel there are a couple of river crossings, the Anatori and the wider Turamiwiwi. Both are best tackled at low tide, so fitting a snorkel is a smart move. The Turamiwiwi is the trickier of the two and best left until it hasn't been raining.

Along the coast you'll find big sand dunes, some around 50m tall, which are good fun on a quad or dirtbike. An easy, scenic outing that pays off with classic remote West Coast country and a real sense of getting away from it all.
