4WD track in the Taranaki region
Whangamomona Road is a historic Taranaki gorge route with hand-dug tunnels, plank bridges and steep drop-offs, easy when dry but tough in the wet.
Cut into the side of the gorge several metres above the water, this old route runs through the Whangamomona gorge country of inland Taranaki, starting near the famous Whangamomona Hotel. The two hand-dug tunnels are a real highlight, along with a series of bridges, including some narrow wooden plank crossings, and big gorge views with plenty of spots to pull over and take it in.
It's unmaintained and prone to slips and washouts, with steep drop-offs throughout, so conditions swing hugely with rain and recent grading. Fairly easy when dry, a genuine challenge once it's wet. Watch for deep holes and forced lines close to the cliffs, which can belly out even a lifted truck. Mud tyres, at least three vehicles, and recovery gear like a winch are all a good idea.
Carry extra fuel, as there's nothing for around 100km. Stop in at the hotel and chuck something in the road maintenance fund, and give them a call before you head in to check it's open. The gate is locked for an annual winter closure, from late April through to around Labour Weekend.
