Whangamomona Road

4WD track in the Taranaki region

Whangamomona Road is a historic Taranaki gorge route with hand-dug tunnels, plank bridges and big views, ranging from easy when dry to a serious challenge.

(11)

This historic, now unmaintained 4WD route runs through the Whangamomona gorge country of inland Taranaki, starting near the iconic Whangamomona Hotel. Cut into the side of the gorge, the track sits several metres above the water and is famous for its two hand-dug tunnels, a series of bridges including some narrow wooden plank crossings, and big gorge views with plenty of spots to stop and take it in.

There are steep drop-offs throughout, and the area is prone to slips and washouts, so conditions vary hugely with rain and recent grading — from fairly easy when dry to a genuine challenge after wet weather. Watch for deep holes and forced lines close to the cliffs, which can belly out even a lifted truck. Mud tyres, at least three vehicles, and recovery gear such as a winch are recommended. Carry extra fuel, as there's nothing for around 100km.

Be sure to stop at the Whangamomona Hotel and make a donation to the road maintenance fund, and give them a call before heading in to confirm the track is open. Note the route observes an annual winter closure, with the gate locked from late April until around Labour Weekend.
