West Manuherikia (Omarama Saddle)

4WD track in the Otago region

West Manuherikia (Omarama Saddle) is an Otago high-country traverse over a 1200m saddle, with a rocky climb, big views, and 30-plus fords.

(10)

Crossing the Omarama Saddle at over 1200 metres, this high-country traverse links the Omarama end with the St Bathans side and the wider Maniototo Plain. The views from the top are worth a stop, and the elevation means weather turns quickly. People have driven over the top in snow even in summer.

Rated easy to medium, it starts with a good slow, rocky climb on loose rock to the saddle. Low range and a steady crawl works well. Then come the steep descents where passing places are limited, so keep an eye out for oncoming vehicles. Down in the valley the track follows old stream beds of river stones, bumpy going, and crosses 30-plus small fords. They're tame and low in dry conditions, though levels can run high after rain. The section south of Top Hut is rougher and cut up. The farmland section near the Omarama end has a mud base that can get tricky when wet.

Airing down to the low-to-mid 20s helps over the stony bits. Sharp rocks make large wheels vulnerable. Look out for the historic water race that supplied the St Bathans gold workings, and both Boundary Creek Hut and Top Hut sit along the route for an overnight stop.
