This high-country traverse in Otago crosses the Omarama Saddle at over 1200 metres, linking the Omarama end with the St Bathans side and the wider Maniototo Plain. The reward is stunning views in every direction, so plan to stop at the top and take them in. The route is generally rated easy to medium, but the elevation means the weather can turn quickly, even snowing in summer. A good slow climb on a rocky, loose-rock surface leads to the saddle, followed by steep descents where passing places are limited, so watch for oncoming vehicles. Down in the valley the track follows old stream beds and crosses 30-plus small fords, tame and low in dry conditions, though levels can run high after rain. The section south of Top Hut is rougher and cut up. Airing down to the low-to-mid 20s improves comfort over the bumpy stony sections. Look out for the historic water race built to supply the St Bathans gold workings. Both Boundary Creek Hut and Top Hut sit along the route for an overnight stop. Sharp rocks make large-diameter wheels vulnerable.
