Waitetuna Valley

4WD track in the Waikato region

Waitetuna Valley in the Waikato is an easy half-seal, half-gravel detour between Raglan and Hamilton, with valley views and a dusty working quarry partway over the hill.

(5)

More of a scenic detour between Raglan and Hamilton than a destination in itself, this one runs through rolling hill country. It's roughly half seal and half gravel, with the sealed bits quite tight and twisty while the gravel tends to run wide and open.

The gravel climbs over a hill that can give you pleasant valley views on a clear day, though low cloud will shut the outlook down completely. A working quarry partway over the hill means weekday traffic can include larger vehicles, and it throws up dust and the occasional foul smell. Most of the gravel corners are heavily corrugated, so expect a bumpy ride and the odd underside scrape in low-clearance cars.

Otherwise the going is easy and fine for most vehicles, including 2WD family cars. Worth noting that near the southern end the road changes name, so coming from the south it actually starts as Fillery Road.
