Waiotemarama Gorge

4WD track in the Northland region

(3)

Waiotemarama Gorge Road is a scenic shortcut between Waipoua Forest and Opononi in Northland. It's an easy but enjoyable drive, with a twisty route that climbs up over the range and winds back down the other side, surrounded by mature Northland bush. The setting feels pleasantly remote, and reviewers consistently rate it well worth taking for the scenery alone. Near the southern end you'll find old buildings and drying pig skins, an interesting and unexpected stop. The Waiotemarama Waterfall walk begins midway along the road if you fancy stretching your legs. Just south of the road, don't miss Tane Mahuta, New Zealand's largest kauri tree and a genuine must-see while you're in the area. The combination of an easy grade, lush bush and these nearby highlights makes this a rewarding detour rather than just a way to get from A to B.
