Waiotemarama Gorge

4WD track in the Northland region

Waiotemarama Gorge is an easy, twisty Northland 4WD drive through mature bush between Waipoua Forest and Opononi, near Tane Mahuta.

(3)

A scenic shortcut between Waipoua Forest and Opononi, this one climbs up over the range and winds back down the other side, all wrapped in mature Northland bush. It's an easy drive but an enjoyable one, twisty enough to keep things interesting, and the setting feels pleasantly remote.

Near the southern end there are some old buildings and drying pig skins, an unexpected stop worth a look. The Waiotemarama Waterfall walk starts midway along the road if you fancy stretching your legs.

Just south of the road is Tane Mahuta, New Zealand's largest kauri tree and well worth the visit while you're up this way. Between the easy grade, the lush bush and the highlights nearby, it makes for a rewarding detour rather than just a way of getting from A to B.
