Out in the Tararua foothills, close to the Wairarapa, this one's an easy run. The road throws up a few good views along the way, but the Waiohine River at the end is the real draw.

The driving is straightforward, more about the destination than the route.

Down at the river there are clear swimming holes, good picnic spots and plenty to look at, so it's a fine place to while away a few hours on a warm day. Pack a picnic, bring your togs for a dip, and settle in by the water. Good one for a family day trip or a quiet riverside break.
