(4)

Tucked into the Tararua foothills near Greytown in the Wellington region, this is an easy cruise up a scenic, well-maintained gravel road to the Waiohine Gorge campsite. The drive is cruisy and suits stock vehicles, with beautiful views and plenty of native birdlife, including kereru flitting along the way.

On dry days expect heavy dust if you're following another vehicle, and the road can get busy. There are a few side tracks branching off, but pick wisely: some are gated and others are super tight, so you'll likely pick up pinstripes and bush rash if you venture down them.

The campsite itself is tidy, with good clean facilities and well-maintained grounds, making it a great spot for a one-nighter. At the end, walk the 100m to the swing bridge for amazing views over the Waiohine River.
