Waiohine Gorge

4WD track in the Wellington region

Waiohine Gorge is an easy Wellington gravel cruise through the Tararua foothills to a tidy campsite, with kereru, dust on dry days, and a swing bridge.

(4)

Up in the Tararua foothills behind Greytown, this is an easy cruise on a scenic, well-maintained gravel road that runs out to the Waiohine Gorge campsite.

On dry days expect heavy dust if you're following another vehicle, and the road can get busy. A few side tracks branch off the main route, but pick wisely. Some are gated and others are super tight, so you'll likely come away with pinstripes and bush rash if you head down them.

The campsite is tidy, with good clean facilities and well-kept grounds, so it's a decent spot for a one-nighter. Once you're parked up, it's a 100m walk to the swing bridge for a good look out over the Waiohine River.
