SH38, also known as Waikaremoana Road, is one of the last remaining gravel highways in New Zealand, winding around Lake Waikaremoana in the rugged country of inland Hawke's Bay. It makes for a long day's drive, or you can spend the night by the lake. The scenery is the real drawcard here, with bush-clad hills and lake views that impress in any weather. There are plenty of turn-offs and small towns to explore along the way, and a lake campsite around the midpoint makes a handy stop with friendly people and great views. This is an easy gravel route that doesn't require 4WD, though the surface can be rough in places, so take it steady to be kind to your tyres. Expect dust in dry weather and keep an eye out for animals wandering onto the road. Best to leave your dog at home — they're not allowed at any of the campsites along the road.
