4WD track in the Otago region
Waikaia Bush Road is a rough, steep gravel climb onto the Old Man Range above Roxburgh in Otago, with open tussock tops and big views.
A rough gravel climb onto the Old Man Range, this one gives you an alternative way up into the high tussock country above Roxburgh. Despite the name, there's no bush to speak of. The whole range up here is open and treeless, with nothing green about it.
The track climbs quickly and steeply, with a few gates along the way and sweeping views opening up over Roxburgh and the surrounding country as you go. It links well with the other tracks in the area if you're after a big day, or three, out. The descent is a long steep gravel run, so lean on engine braking to save cooking your brakes on the way down.
Sitting high on the range, it can be cold even on a fine day, with snow lingering up top well into spring. A straightforward climb that earns its keep for the views alone.
