In the eastern Wellington region's remote backcountry, this well-graded gravel road offers an alternative to the sealed approach to Waihi Falls. Winding up from Route 52 through rolling farmland (with the Pongaroa end making a pleasant loop), it's an easy drive suitable for just about any 2WD vehicle. The scenery is quietly rewarding — open country where you might spot deer along the way — and the route ends at a tidy car park. From there, don't be put off by the sign claiming a 10 minute walk: it takes maybe 2 minutes to reach the falls, which are genuinely stunning, especially after rain. This is a true hidden gem, remote and worth the trip out at any time of year. Note the water in the pool often isn't clean enough for swimming, so come for the views rather than a dip. Watch for blind corners on the gravel, as locals can drive it briskly.
