Urchin Lookout is a short, easy 4WD route in the Waikato that climbs to a lookout above the Urchin Campsite. The drive is mostly gravel with a few hairpins as it winds up the hill, an undemanding run that makes a good way to break up a longer north-south journey.

The forest along the way is the real highlight, with stunning native bush flanking the climb. Don't expect a grand panorama at the top though, as the trees largely obscure the view from the lookout itself.

Keep an eye out for a swing bridge around the corner, which is worth a quick detour if you've got the time. This is a pleasant, relaxed stop rather than a technical challenge.
