Climbing the western side of the Kaimai Ranges, Thompsons Track works its way up to a cracking view from the top. It's a proper hard track and a popular one, with a rough, chewed-up and rocky first section, steep rocky climbs and ruts higher up. The top section gets tight, with multiple routes near the lookout, so be mindful of bush rash and the risk of paint, panel and runner damage.

Surfaces turn very slippery after rain, so best tackled when it's been reasonably dry. A capable 4WD with decent clearance and some off-road experience will get you there, and a winch is worth carrying for the rougher sections and steep climbs. Lowering tyre pressures helps, and a lift or larger tyres make the trickier spots near the lookout easier. Allow plenty of time, as even a dry run can take a few hours.

It's a shared-use track, busy with other drivers, dirt bikers and hunters, with few passing or turnaround spots, so keep an eye out for oncoming traffic.
