Thompsons Track climbs the western side of the Kaimai Ranges in the Waikato, rewarding you with an incredible view from the top. This is a proper hard track and a popular one, with a rough, chewed-up and rocky first section, steep rocky climbs and ruts higher up. The top section is tight, so be mindful of bush rash and the risk of paint, panel and runner damage. Surfaces become very slippery after rain, so it's best tackled when the weather has been reasonably dry. A capable 4WD and some off-road experience are recommended, and a winch is worth carrying. This is a shared-use track popular with other drivers, dirt bikers and hunters, with few passing or turnaround spots, so keep an eye out for oncoming traffic. Please drive responsibly and keep damage to a minimum - avoid spinning wheels or tearing up the surface, because the future of tracks like this depends on everyone doing their bit.
