4WD track in the Southland region
The Nuggets Road is an easy Catlins gravel run out to Nugget Point lighthouse, with coastal lookouts over the rocky islets in the surf below.
Out on the Catlins coast, this gravel road runs to one of the country's best-known lighthouses at Nugget Point. The road itself is an easy, accessible run, nothing technical about it. What you've come for is at the end of it.
From the car park a short walk takes you up to the lighthouse, where the lookout opens onto the 'nuggets', the rocky islets scattered through the surf below. Sweeping coastal views and proper rugged southern ocean scenery.
Worth bringing a camera and allowing a bit of time for the walk up. That's the highlight of the trip.
