The Arrowsmith 4WD track is a seasonal Canterbury high-country loop with shale slips, big valley views and overnight stays at Top Hut by the Ashburton River.

Up in the high country on Arrowsmith Station, this seasonal track runs over the summer only. It's a 40km round trip with views over the Cameron Valley and the Arrowsmith Range. You climb over the saddle into the Ashburton Headwaters, with the old musterers' hut a good spot to pull over for a rest and a brew, then follow the Ashburton River past its rapids and steep ravines around Ribbonwood Hill and back to the flats.

It's a varied high-country drive. Steep sections, loose shale slips crossed on an angle, and boggy patches mean it's best left for when it's dry, ideally with two trucks in case one gets stuck. When it's well maintained in summer it runs reasonably easy and not too scratchy, though the angles across the shale can feel precarious.

Down in the valley you can overnight at Top Hut (DOC), a cracking spot beside the river. Access needs permission from the station: contact the farm manager and drop the $25 fee at the homestead on the way in. Details at https://www.arrowsmithstation.co.nz/accommodation
