4WD track in the Wellington region
Tauwhareniaku River Access is an easy gravel side track in the Wellington region, a relaxed riverside picnic spot with two simple entrances and an optional crossing.
This short side track in the Wellington region drops you down onto the Tauwhareniaku River, a relaxed spot popular for a picnic, a quiet stop by the water or a couple of cold ones with mates.
There are two entrances and neither is difficult. One way is a simple hop straight down onto the river; the other squeezes through the bush with a bit of branch rash and a decent drop into the river, so take care if you choose that line. If you'd rather stay scratch-free, turn left as you climb up onto the stop bank and enjoy an easy cruise down to the river. The track itself is gravel and nothing challenging.
You can push further down the river if you like, where there's an optional river crossing for those keen to have a go — just check the depth before committing, as it can run deep. All up, a chill little spot that's easy to enjoy.
