4WD track in the West Coast region
This track provides access down to the Taramakau River on the West Coast. Being a braided river, conditions change frequently and the channels shift, so it's hard to map a fixed line that makes sense - follow your sense of adventure (and caution) when exploring the area. When we visited there was minimal water around, but after a big storm that could change quite a bit. Read the river carefully before committing to any crossing, and keep an eye on the weather upstream. The riverbed offers open gravel terrain with plenty of room to pick your own way, set against the broad valley scenery typical of this part of the coast.
