4WD track in the West Coast region
Taramakau River Access on the West Coast drops onto a braided gravel riverbed with open shingle, shifting channels, and big swings in water levels.
Down onto the braided gravel of the Taramakau riverbed. Plenty of room to pick your own way across the open shingle.
Because it's a braided river, the channels shift and conditions change all the time, so there's no fixed line worth mapping. Read the river carefully before committing to a crossing and have a good look at where you're putting your wheels.
Water levels swing hugely with the weather. One visit there might be next to nothing about, then a big storm fills it up in a hurry. Keep an eye on the weather upstream, because what's happening in the hills feeds straight down here.
