Takaputahi Road

4WD track in the Gisborne region

(3)

A well graded gravel road in the Gisborne backcountry, running out toward the Whitikau Campsite and Opiti Road before ending at a locked gate. It's an easygoing, well-liked drive that suits most setups, with the only mildly technical section near the very start. To reach the riverside campsite at the end you cross a ford, going straight rather than turning left over the bridge. The campsite itself sits in a beautiful spot right by the river, a popular base for a weekend away where kids can play in the water. Expect classic New Zealand bush and river scenery throughout. The drive is relaxed enough that some drop their tyre pressures and cruise. Note there is gorse and a slip near the very end that can stop you reaching the final finish point. A rewarding, chilled-out run that's well worth the trip for the camping at the end.
