Takaputahi Road

4WD track in the Gisborne region

Takaputahi Road is an easygoing Gisborne backcountry gravel drive through bush and river scenery, ending at a riverside campsite reached by a ford.

(3)

An easygoing gravel run through the backcountry out Gisborne way, heading toward the Whitikau Campsite and Opiti Road before the road ends at a locked gate. Classic New Zealand bush and river scenery the whole way, and it suits most setups.

The road's well graded and forgiving, with the only mildly technical bit near the very start. After that it's a relaxed cruise, and some drivers drop their tyre pressures to soften the ride a little. Near the end there's a slip and some overgrown gorse that can stop you reaching the final finish point.

To get to the riverside campsite you cross a ford, going straight rather than turning left over the bridge. The campsite sits in a lovely spot right by the river, a popular base for a weekend where the kids can play in the water. Low-key trip that's well worth it for the camping at the end.
