Spirits Bay Road

4WD track in the Northland region

Spirits Bay Road in Far North Northland is a wide, well-graded gravel route to New Zealand's northernmost public campsite at Kapowairua.

At the very top of Northland in the Far North, Spirits Bay Road branches north off Te Hapua Road, roughly halfway along, and runs out to the Spirits Bay (Kapowairua) DOC campsite. Spirits Bay sits slightly north of Cape Reinga, making this the northernmost public road and campsite in New Zealand.

Both Te Hapua and Spirits Bay roads are wide, well-groomed gravel, graded gently enough for most vehicles and even motorhomes, though they can get dusty when dry. The route crosses the remote Te Paki landscape before dropping down to a beautiful, isolated bay that holds deep Māori spiritual significance.

At the end, the Spirits Bay DOC campsite makes a peaceful coastal base, with several walking tracks nearby. It's a long way north with limited services, so come well prepared and enjoy the rare sense of reaching the very top of the country.
