4WD track in the Southland region
Slope Point Road's 4WD section is a short, tight coastal detour in Southland near mainland New Zealand's southernmost point, easy enough for a stock 4WD.
Down at the bottom of the South Island, this short run heads toward the coast near Slope Point, the southernmost point of mainland New Zealand. The country here is open coastal farmland, exposed to the full force of the wild southern weather, with the beach off in the distance.
The driving itself isn't hard. What catches you out is how tight it is, with very few places to turn around and close vegetation that'll leave some bush rash down the sides. It's manageable in a stock vehicle, one bloke did it in a standard Triton on town tyres.
Much of the surrounding land is private, and there's a gate marking the boundary, so don't head past it onto private property. This is a short, scenic detour rather than any sort of technical challenge, good for a taste of the remote southern coastline.
