Slope Point Road

4WD track in the Southland region

(1)

Tucked into the far southern corner of the Catlins coast in Southland, Slope Point Road is a short, easy gravel run that carries you out beyond Slope Point itself to an intersection. From there you can head down toward the fishing spot, best tackled on foot, or take the other Slope Point route. The road is straightforward with no real obstacles, making it accessible to most vehicles, and it rewards you with some genuinely nice coastal views along the way. There are public toilets at the start, handy before you set off. While some find the drive itself fairly unremarkable, the real draw is the destination: this is about as far south as you can push on the New Zealand mainland, and standing at the bottom of the South Island is a satisfying milestone in its own right.
