4WD track in the Marlborough region
Severn to Sedgemere is a remote Marlborough high-country gravel track through Molesworth, with tussock scenery, river crossings and DOC-marked arrows.
Open, remote tussock and mountain country that few people get to see, deep in the Molesworth high country. This route runs through Tarndale to link up with the Acheron Road. It's not well known, so chances are you'll have it to yourself, and the scenery is the real drawcard.
The Severn to Sedgemere road is a scenic gravel track, generally fairly easy going. There are river crossings, and some shallow standing water toward the Sedgemere end, nothing deep, but you'll want to be comfortable with crossings. Follow the orange DOC arrows, which mark the correct line and keep you clear of a locked gate on the Tarndale option.
The road is seasonal and can close at short notice for weather or fire risk, so check with DOC before you head out. There's no camping along the way, so allow enough travel time to reach the designated campgrounds. A night at Lake Tennyson makes a good base, then carry on through Molesworth. Keep to the marked route and don't attempt it in heavy rain or flooding.
