4WD track in the Otago region
Serpentine Road is a hard, boggy Central Otago 4WD run out to a historic gold mining church, deep bog holes and high country, dry conditions only.
Out in classic Central Otago high country, this harder run finishes at an historic gold mining settlement, marked by its old stone church. The payoff at the end is a real piece of the gold rush set against the open tussock tops.
The track itself is genuinely challenging, with plenty of deep bog holes and soft, unpredictable bottoms. Picking a careful line matters, and a spotter earns their keep through the bigger holes. The bog near the church can sit deep enough to go over the bonnet on vehicles without a snorkel, so have a good think before committing if you're running stock.
It's a fun run that rates well with people who tackle it, but dry conditions only. Open from the 30th of September through to King's Birthday weekend (seasonal closure 1 June to 1 October). Stay on the track and leave any gates as you found them.
