4WD track in the Canterbury region
Scotties Hut/Edwards Valley is a St James high country drive in Canterbury with sweeping mountain views, small river crossings, and a DOC permit gate.
Out through the St James Conservation Area in the high country of inland Canterbury, this one follows the Edwards Valley toward the Waiau River. You get sweeping views out to the river and mountains the whole way, and it's a real highlight for plenty who drive it. Only open for a short window each year, officially closed 20 April and reopening 15 October, so generally late October to Easter.
The track is bumpy and slow going, with an uneven, rocky surface and lots of small river and creek crossings. Not overly technical though, so it suits capable vehicles without being a hardcore challenge. Crossings are easy when dry, but the last ford before Scotties Hut can get tricky after rain.
All vehicles must register with DOC before entering to get gate codes. Search 'vehicle access St James DOC' for instructions, permits usually come through online almost straight away. The route passes the turnoff to the Cow Stream hot pools, though the sandflies there can be fierce. Past Scotties Hut the track isn't maintained, and heading over Charlies Saddle isn't recommended.
