4WD track in the Wellington region
River Mouth is a short, easy gravel run to the Otaki River mouth north of Wellington, with open coastal views and good surfcasting along the beach.
A short, easy run out to where the Otaki River meets the sea, on the coast north of Wellington. Open coastal setting, with the river mouth opening out to the water. A relaxed drive that's good for a spot of fishing or lunch by the beach.
The track is simple gravel with a few bumps but nothing demanding, so it suits just about any vehicle. Stay on the formed track, as the land inland is all private. The northern area beyond the concrete blocks is Maori land looked after by local people, so it's best not to head past that point unless you're well known to them.
The whole stretch of beach from the start is a favourite for surfcasting, with snapper, kahawai and gurnard all on offer. The area has copped some dumped rubbish and burnt-out cars over the years, so respect the place and take your rubbish home with you.
