Climbing steeply into the Remarkable Ranges above Queenstown, this road is a mix of chipseal and gravel that winds quickly up the mountain. The reward is spectacular scenery, with sweeping views out over Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding district. It's rated an easy drive in fine conditions and is a popular run for soaking up the high-country panorama, whether or not you're heading to the ski field itself. The route is well formed but gains altitude fast, so the alpine environment can change quickly. Access is through a gate where a fee is charged, so come prepared to pay on entry. A short, rewarding climb that packs in big views for relatively little effort.
