(32)

On Wellington's rugged South Coast near Owhiro Bay, Red Rocks is a popular and scenic 4WD run with stunning coastal views, seal colonies and wind turbines visible from the far end. Sand, rocks, river crossings and the infamous Devil's Gate make it an awesome trip. Allow around 4 hours return at a leisurely pace, with plenty of spots to pull over for lunch and soak it all in.

The first part of the track is fairly well graded and easy enough. Beyond Devil's Gate you'll face long soft sand and pebble beaches where vehicles bog regularly, plus the tide and an optional stream crossing - so air down, use low range and carry recovery gear. The soft sand catches so many out that getting stuck here is almost a local tradition. Watch for sharp rocks and slippery seaweed further along, which bogs up in wheel arches.

Before Devil's Gate please stay on the track, off the beaches, and slow down. There are lots of walkers and mountain bikers about, and ongoing pressure to close vehicle access. Note Red Rocks is closed to vehicles on Sundays, 6am to 6pm. A buddy or spotter is well worth having past the gate.
