A simple gravel route climbing roughly 1000 metres up into the hills of the Manawatu-Whanganui region. The access road to the Ranigwahia Hut rewards you with stunning views out over the Central Plateau on a clear day.

The route passes through private land, so leave gates as you found them and stay on the road throughout. The terrain is straightforward gravel rather than technical, suiting anyone after big high-country views without difficult driving, though the elevation and surface reward a clear, settled day. In winter, after a good dump, this is a reliable spot to find snow.

From the carpark a walking track continues up to the hut itself - allow around an hour each way on foot. Pack warm layers if you're heading up in the colder months, and take care to respect the working land you're travelling across.
