Range Road runs through one of the windiest spots in the North Island, a setting put to good use by the wind turbines that line the ridge. The exposed, windswept high country gives the area a distinctive character, and the turbines overhead make for a memorable backdrop.

The route itself is a straightforward gravel drive, easy going for most vehicles. The real reward is the scenery: as you climb the range you're treated to sweeping ridgetop views, and the road then drops down into the valley below with stunning outlooks the whole way.
