Port Waikato

4WD track in the Waikato region

Port Waikato in the Waikato is an easy-going mix of soft-sand dunes, beach and tight bush tracks where the river meets the Tasman, good for stock 4WDs.

You'll find a fun mix of beach, dune and tight bush tracks. It's a busy little spot popular with locals and visitors alike, so stick to existing tracks, don't tear them up, and respect others using the beach.

The dune driving is on soft sand but generally easy going, and a stock 4WD will handle it without trouble. Inland the tracks turn narrow and vegetated, winding through the bush. Good fun, though the close scrub can leave your vehicle with a few scratches, so set expectations accordingly.

There are some nice camping spots tucked away too, and it's a popular base for fishing trips and a bit of exploring. Keep a close eye on the tides if you're heading down onto the beach, and plan your run so you're not caught out. All up, a scenic, well-liked spot that's accessible to most 4WDs.
