4WD track in the Waikato region
Pirongia West Road is an easy Waikato gravel run along the ridgetops, with native bush and sweeping views over Kawhia Harbour.
Winding along the ridgetops on the southern side of Mount Pirongia and the Pirongia Forest Park, this makes a scenic alternative on the way to Kawhia. The payoff is sweeping views over Kawhia Harbour, with hardy native bush lining much of the way.
It's a well-maintained gravel road and an easy, enjoyable run that isn't at all challenging, so it's a good pick for beginners and doable in a normal car in good conditions. The surface carries plenty of loose top metal, a bit like a bag of marbles on the corners, so it can get slippery in wet or winter weather. Running in 4WD helps keep things planted on the bends.
